USB Device (non-mass storage) not working on Ubuntu Guest (macOS host)

Hi,

I'm sure similar question has been asked plenty of times but before brushing off this post aside please read through.

I'm running Virtual box 5.1.2 r108956 (corresponding extension pack installed) on MacOS Sierra 10.12.5.
My virtual box is running Ubuntu 16.04 as Guest OS.
I'm unable to use my USB Device StLink Debugger in Ubuntu.
When I click "Devices->USB->ST..." nothing happens. When I click 2nd time, it says "busy with previous request.."

* I can easily use my USB Storage Device in Ubuntu guest. But non mass storage device does not seem to work.
* I tried adding the USB Device permanently to my Virtual machine, but that also does not help.
* I tried installing guest additions but my gnome login never came back after that (created another VM and copied my files to the new VM.. phew)

I will be happy to provide any more information that might be required to diagnose the problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Pj

Yes. So many times in fact that we were forced to create a FAQ: USB basics and troubleshooting.

Please read all of the posts. If you still have a problem after reading through the whole thing, please follow the advice of the last post, #8: Asking for help and post the information requested.

Download the latest VirtualBox. As of this writing, that would be version 5.2.8. If that doesn't work you should try the latest test builds, especially with all the Spectre/Meltdown patches coming in from all sides.
