virtualbox slow as molasses?
virtualbox slow as molasses?
Running VB on a RHEL7 host server (8Gb memory, 4 cores etc). When I start VB #virtualbox) it throws two errors (pasted below) but then does eventually open. However once it opens it is incredibly slow and the graphics/display are a bit distorted. Am I doing something wrong here? I've installed it before on a physical server and had no issues using it, this time installing it on a RHELL VM and it isnt acting right

Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click and "Show Log" in the GUI, save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip, and attach the zip here.
Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
are you referring to my host VM which in this case is RHEL7 or to a VM on virtual box? at htis point i have no actual VM's created in virtual box due to the performance issues im having with it. So are you looking for a log file off of my Rhel host server? its just a vcenter VM

Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
Are you trying to run a virtual machine inside a virtual machine? If that's the case, no wonder it's slow. Your nested VM will not have any hardware acceleration available, hence slow as molasses is to be expected. And, it's not supported...bwfreas wrote:its just a vcenter VM

Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
hello - thank you for that info into my nested vm situation. I abandoned that and went ahead fot a RHEL6 physical server and installed VB 5.2 and am experiencing many of the same issues. A series of errors upon opening it and sluggish/inoperable use once opened (not accepting inputs)
[server]$ virtualbox
Qt WARNING: failed to get the current screen resources
xkbcommon: ERROR: failed to add default include path /usr/share/X11/xkb
Qt WARNING: Qt: Failed to create XKB context!
Qt WARNING: Use QT_XKB_CONFIG_ROOT environmental variable to provide an additional search path, add ':' as separator to provide several search paths and/or make sure that XKB configuration data directory contains recent enough contents, to update please see http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/ .
Qt WARNING: QXcbConnection: XCB error: 170 (Unknown), sequence: 170, resource id: 90, major code: 146 (Unknown), minor code: 20
i cannot conclude anything other than this is me doing something wrong/missing something on the install... does anyone have any insight or any suggestion that I might try?
thanks in advance

Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
That doesn't sound like a VirtualBox problem. Let me take a wild guess here; are you remote or local on the host? I have a feeling that your libs are not correctly setup...

Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
thank you - so I'm ssh'ing to my host server and utilizing x11 to open virtualbox if that helps answer your question?

Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
Yes it does, as I suspected. Can you try locally? Do you get the same errors? Since my previous wild guess was right on, let me try another one. You won't have the same error message...

Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
indeed yes once again you are spot on....running it locally is blazing fast and no errors....so I must ask....now what?

Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
I guess you'd have to check the application/way/method that you use to access it remotely. That's where the failure is, not with VirtualBox...

Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
its simply an ssh session to the server?
Re: virtualbox slow as molasses?
Hello - this is just a normal everyday SSH session to the host server from which we launch virtualbox (virtualbox&). As you suggested it is very fast when done locally from the server itself via graphical GUI. But when SSH to the base server and open virtualbox as I mentioned its painfully slow. What am i doing wrong here? Thanks very much in advance
