Is it normal for the vm disk to always be mounted?
df -h shows:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on
/dev/disk1s4 466Gi 1.0Gi 185Gi 1% 1 9223372036854775806 0% /private/var/vm
the large number is the ifree.

I'm not even sure what you posted. Where was "df" run? What's the host, what's the guest, what VirtualBox, what's your setup? Simply posting a "df -h" with no context, is not actually a properly setup question...
This is not Twitter, there is no 140 character limit to what you can say in a post...

I thought coming here you would read my mind. Oops!
The host is macOS High Sierra, version 10.13.3.
virtualbox: Version 5.2.6 r120293 (Qt5.6.3)
I ran the df -h on the host system and I am questioning the existence of this mounted disk. I think it is related to virtualbox and I am wondering if this disk should be mounted all the time, even when I don't use virtualbox.

No it's not. Please search the webs before assuming such things...
OSX /private/var/vm
