Logging in as non root user

Logging in as non root user

I has just installed Centos 5.0 as a guest os on Windows XP and have got a NIS client running on my Centos setup. When I try to log in at the GDM login screen all I get is a black screen from logging in a regular user. I am having no problems logging in as root and using su to the regular users. Does anyone have any ideas?
