guest additions lost after hibernation

Post by kenax »

hi, i recently set up winXP in a virtual box within Linux Mint on a slow machine (1.7ghz), works fantastically fast and really enjoying it, but i often do many things on the computer, have many programs open at the same time, or tabs in my browser, and it is quite inconvenient for me to have to shut down the computer every time. it all seems to work when i put win into its native hibernation and the linux host into suspend, but when i wake up, or even just hibernate the win and reboot the vm, the qualities of the guest additions seem to get lost. i lose my shared folder, the mouse does not flow nicely across both systems and the clipboard no longer works. i am forced to go into the admin account on windoze and reinstall the guest additions in order for it to work properly again.
any suggestions? thank you very much

Apparently not... ;)

Can you clarify that part? Are you saving the guest state? Via "native hibernation" ? Windows XP? It does take additional steps to enable that.

What if you simply reboot the VM?

by "it all seems to work" is after i install the guest additions, but it fails after hibernation, which is obviously an inconvenience since i usually have so many programs and browser tabs open.
i found that putting the vm to sleep didn't work well and forced me to restart win, but putting win internally to hibernation worked. i would do that first, then shut down the vm, then suspend the linux host. i found when i tried to hibernate the host there were problems requiring a reboot. suspend not ideal because it drains the battery a bit. not a big deal to shut down cause the only major thing i keep open are a bunch of tabs in the browser, and they reload rather quickly.
but would be nice not to have to restart win and go into admin account to reinstall the guest additions every time :) I prefer to do my regular work in a non-admin windoze account for security reasons, so having to first log into admin account to reinstall guest additions just to get set up every time i turn on the computer is somewhat of an annoyance :o

hmm, well at least one workaround so far and that is to keep the vm running and put the linux host into standby mode, that seems to work. drains the battery a bit, but when i use hibernation there are glitches, maybe i'll eventually figure out how to fix that, but at least a little improvement

I tried your setup, and indeed WinXP goes out of whack! I don't know if it's a VirtualBox issue, or a WinXP issue, haven't tested it with other Win VMs.

But what instead of hibernation of your guest, you simply save its state? As in Machine » Close » Save state. And then you restore it whenever you want...
