Host freezes

Post by Sandee »

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on Acer Aspire E15 (E5-575-33BM). Virtualbox version: 5.0.40_Ubuntu r115130.
I was able to run virtual machines (Hortonworks Sandbox HDP) on this machine till few days back.
Few days back, I enabled Secureboot, rebooted and now I am unable to run the virtual machine which was working before.
Then I turned-off Secureboot and retried but no help.
Now, when I start this virtual machine, it hangs the host and I need to hard reboot.

Could this be due to any of the following:
1. Secureboot enabled Hyper-V?
2. VT-X not identified by Virtualbox? As per some posts, I'm supposed to turn-off Hyper-V to enable VirtualBox to use VT-X.

All the VBox.logs are empty and please refer to "tail -f kernel.log" when the virtual machine is launched. after this, host becomes unresponsive and I need to hard reboot.

Please help.

Thanks,
Sandeep

It looks like you're using the distro's fork version of VirtualBox. You can either ask in their forums for help, or completely remove/uninstall/delete/purge their version and install the official version from the Downloads section of VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads).

If that doesn't work you should try the latest test builds, especially with all the Spectre/Meltdown patches coming in from all sides. In fact try that one first.

Also, consider changing your favorite internet search engine. There should be plenty of results about this, but the search engine you're using now, does not seem to return any results for some reason. Either that or you didn't search at all...
