Huawei USB Modem + Virtual Machine

Post by bochniak »

Hello
I have a VirtualBox machine installed on Debian. I have a Huawei USB modem plugged into the server(Bus 002 Device 016: ID 12d1:1506 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E398 LTE/UMTS/GSM Modem/Networkcard
). On the virtual machine after entering the command "lsusb" is only the following entry:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b: 0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
How can I run the modem to send SMS messages?

Linux host USB is probably the easiest of all distros supported. There needs to be 3 things to achieve success.
  • 1) Matching extension pack installed.
    2) ( host requirement ) user name added to the vboxusers group followed with a logout and login or a reboot of the host to enable the new permission.
    3) You need to be using the official version of VirtualBox and the official version of the extension pack.
Note: the repo version of the extension pack does not have USB support because VirtualBox USB is closed source and you must use and accept the license for the official version.

I have installed the latest version 5.2 with the extensionpack and it is constantly displayed on the virtual machine after entering "lsusb":
001 Device 001: ID 1d6b: 0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Have you setup a USB filter in the VM settings to capture the device and pass it to the guest?

Please read the following thread: USB basics and troubleshooting, all of the posts. If you still have a problem after reading through the whole thing, please follow the advice of the last post, #8: Asking for help.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.
