Problems with Virtual Box Hard Drives

Post by fb0001 »

On my machine I Dual boot between Windows Vista Ultimate (32bit version) and Ubuntu 8.04 (64 bit version). In both Windows and Linux I run Virtual Box 1.6.4 For the linux setup I downloaded the 64bit deb file (closed source version)

The linux and windows setup share a hard drive for data, and all my virtual machines hard drives are stored here. Each setup has there own virtual machines and only share the hard drives.

The problem

My windows XP virtual machine does not start up in linux. Windows XP just gives a blue screen of death and resets itself. In Windows Vista, the windows XP virtual machine works fine.

What could be causing this issue. This issue cropped when I upgraded to 1.6.0 of virtual box, all other versions have not helped the issue.

I can't help you here, but your title is very misleading. I suggest the the problem is nothing to do with the VDIs per se. You say that the VM boots happily and works under the 32bit windows version of VBox, but that it craters under the 64bit Linux version.

This is almost certainly a bug in the 64Bit version code base. I suggest that ou search the bugtrack system to see if this one have already been reported and if not then raise an issue.
