Hi everyone. I tried to install Win7 as VM yesterday, but at the point where I would start-up, it would freeze the host and I had to hard reboot. I downloaded another Win7-ISO just to make sure that it was not something related to the ISO. Same result, freeze of the host. I then also tried to run LinuxMint as VM, again a freeze.

I saw other posts about installing the latest VirtualBox builds (VirtualBox-5.2.5-120181-Linux_amd64 to be precise), since I ran the Ubuntu-fork, which apparently causes the problems. But now I have the following error message when trying to start the VM:

The virtual machine 'Win7_VM' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).

I tried executing the vboxconfig, but it would just prompt me to enter my root password over and over again without doing nothing. After about 30 times I quit.

I suppose I bricked something, but I do not know how exactly to remove all the packages to get a clean install (if that is necessary). I am not that accustomed to Linux, yet.

Please do not post images on 3rd party sites. If the error is simple, just type it. If it's complicated, attach the image locally (see the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form).

Then there is a chance that you didn't uninstall the fork version. You can't have both of them installed. You need to completely remove/uninstall/delete/purge their version and install the official version from the Downloads section of VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads), or these days from the latest test builds.

How you remove a package from an Ubuntu installation is not really a VirtualBox question, but there are several ways. Others prefer the "apt-get", others "dpkg" and yet others (me) prefer "synaptic". Search the web for whatever suits your needs...
