[ModEdit; related ticket: #17438: Can't install Virtualbox 5.2.4 on OSX 10.13.2]
I just installed osx high sierra from scratch. When I tried to install virtualbox (first 5.2, but 5.1 has the same result) the installer ends with this message:
"The installation failed" "The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance".
After installation (which fails) I am able to open the virtual box manager, but I can't run virtual machines. The result of "kextstat | grep -v com.apple" is zero (no result). I also created a ticket in the bugtracker: 17438

That means that the kext (the Kernel EXTensions) for VirtualBox have not been installed successfully. Chances are that you didn't allow Oracle to install the extensions. Did you have a message saying that you had to approve Oracle? Are you sitting in front of your computer, or you're remotely connecting?
Have a look at Apple's Technical Note TN2459:

I didn't get the popup, but the systemsettings "SECURITY & PRIVACY" did allow me to grant access for oracle!
Thanks!

Still Apple hasn't fixed that thing? Seriously now?
You said you installed it from "scratch"? How exactly since it requires an existing Mac to download the installer and run it from?
Thanks for the update. Marking as [WorksForMe].
