Fullscreen / Not Full screen

Guest is Windows 2003 server,
Host is Windows XP SP2 Host
current version 1.6.4.

I did a quick search and it seems others are having some full screen issues but I didn't see this one listed so I'll post:

I've noticed that since 1.6.x, when my Guest boots up even though the virtual machine window is full screen, the Guest starts up at 800x600 -

I checked and the latest tools are installed and I removed/re-add them.

If I switch out of full screen then back into full screen it goes to the full screen (1024x768 or 1024x512 depending on which monitor I'm displaying on)

A clean shutdown, restart will bring it back up in 800x600 again.

anything higher then 800x600 is not even an option.

I would say it's something with the guest except the virtualbox window itself is full screen and I just have black borders around the rest... it's what I would refer to as "mini-windows"

Is there something now that defaults always to 800x600 instead of the true full screen mode on boot up? Can the code not detect current resolution except when forced into full screen?

Mind you this is much better then the full screen issues in 1.6.2 it's just a minor inconvenience to have to switch out of and back into full screen when the guest boots

Version 1.6.4 should have addressed more of the resolution issues, but I advise to read the note on the download page before installing 1.6.4 and read the discussion about 1.6.4 in the 'Using VB' forum. It's best to wait 'till 1.6.6 is released.

Well this is 1.6.4

Like I said it is way better then it was in 1.6.2, just not quite as nice as it was in 1.5.6

I'm sure they are working on it

You could try and install the GA from 1.5.6 found at http://www.virtualbox.org/download/1.5.6

tried that too.. same result.

Seems to be the max resolution being passed to the guest is incorrect on first boot up..

I'll bug it I can't find anything close on the tracker

Please wait for 1.6.6 and see if it's still there. The next version should be released pretty soon.

Just thought I'd mention i downloaded and compiled the latest OSE snapshot... the full screen issue I was seeing has been resolved.

I'm going to bring this back up again.... even if it's just me ;)

I've noticed that the release version of vbox (2.0 and 2.0.2 included) all seem to have this issue for me.. while the virtual machines appear to start up in full screen, the max resolution for them is 800x600. Ctrl-F twice (toggle out of and back into full screen) properly adjusts the screen to full screen (1024x768)

Now the interesting thing is if I compile the OSE version from snapshot, these always seem to work properly.

Currently on a Vista64 host running the AMD64 version of 2.0.2 - guess include Vista32, Windows XP, Windows 2003 server, Windows 2008 server, Ubuntu. All seem to be effected, which is why I posted in the Hosts forum.

I've checked the logs but don't see anything in particular that's different in regards to the video from OSE to Full.

EDIT: one thing I do notice is that even in full screen with latest guest additions, the Runtime Session information reports back ScreenResolution of 640x480x32 and shows my Guest Additions as "Version 1.4"

Noticed exactly the same with a ubuntu guest OS,

host OS vista Home basic 32 bit, dual core processor.
