Hi socratis,
I bought another sd card reader on amazon, it arrived late yesterday.
It seems to be staying connected without issue.
So I think the root issue is with the Kingston Card reader FCR-HS3.
The new reader works fine.
No need to investigate on my behalf any longer.

It's OK, I've always wanted to see what the "usbcardreader" did anyway...
Sometimes it's not always the software to blame.
