ttyACM0 there, not there

Hi,
I'm running virtualbox 5.1.26_Gentoo r117224
I have a USB that creates the device ttyACM0 when it gets plugged into the USB port of the host.
I am forwarding the device as COM4 in the virtual machine's settings.
Part of the device's normal operation is to reset itself periodically, meaning it performs a hard-reset.
This causes the /dev/ttyACM0 device to disappear briefly.
The problem is that the Virtualbox VM then pops-up an error message saying that the resource is not available and even if it comes back online, the VM refuses to 'see' it anymore.
Is there a way to make the VM more forgiving and re-use the /dev/ttyACM0 when it comes back up?
Thank you
