Spent ages messing round with it on my Asus eee 701SD. Finally got it, in Windows XP, I changed "Default Monitor" to "Plug and Play Monitor", started working normally after that.

I had the same problem, however with Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit) however had to remove the video card driver and reboot. It then reinstalled VirtualBox driver and seemed to work fine.
I made a
screen capture during the process, the above text is likely all you need to understand this fix though.

How did you switch from "default monitor" to "plug and play monitor"? "Default monitor" is the only option I have available.

Force a driver update and manually select it. Don't let Windows search for it automatically.
