no internet connection OS X host, Win7 guest

Host OS 10.12.6. Guest Win7 (64-bit). VirtualBox 5.1.28

I couldn't get online with VB 5.1.26, so I installed 5.1.28 and I still have no internet connection. The error message says a cable is disconnected: not connected; no connections available. Windows does not look for a wireless connection. I have no ethernet port on my computer.
How do I get the WDDM video driver to enable Direct3D acceleration? I get a message that hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver.
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Follow a "start the VM from cold-boot" / "observe error" / "shutdown the VM" cycle.
  • With the VM shut down completely (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response (see the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form).

I don't know how to do the first two, so I booted the VM as usual from the VirtualBox Manager and then shut down the VM (Windows) after signing in.

You did well ;)
The error "Cable disconnected" is correct, I just wanted to make sure. Go to VM Settings » Network » Adapter 1 » Advanced » Cable Connected <- check that.

Under "Advanced"
Adapter Type: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)
Promiscuous Mode: Allow VMs
MAC ADDRESS: 08002772364C
The box next to "Cable Connected" is checked

Not according to the logs. Are we going to go like that? The logs you sent me are crystal clear:
00:00:01.841679 CableConnected <integer> = 0x0000000000000000 (0)
0 means disconnected.

OK. You're the expert. So what do I do?
As I wrote, my computer is made to work wirelessly. I don't use an ethernet cable. Of oourse there's no cable connected. Please advise.

Open the VM Settings » Network » Adapter 1. Open the Advanced arrow so that the whole thing shows, it's expanded. Take a screenshot of that and attach it. Not your whole screen, just the settings.

[Mod edit: .pdf.zip file deleted, see messages below for the picture]

Please replace the PDF.ZIP with a single PNG file, inline. The default screenshot on OSX is PNG after all, you don't have to print it into PDF and ZIP it, it makes the whole process cumbersome. Thanks...

PS. If you're on HiDPI, reduce it by 50%

I tried to do that, but the file is too big. the png file is 171 kb and the limit is 128 kb.

I added the "PS." after I posted my message so you may have missed it, sorry. You are on HiDPI, so reduce the image by at least 50%. Preview.app shows you the image final size when you try to resize it (bottom left).
