Re: no internet connection OS X host, Win7 guest
Change the "Attached to:" value from "Host-only Adapter" to "NAT". Do you know how/why that value changed from its default of NAT? I should have noticed it in the logs, but I was only looking for the cable, which apparently is connected, contrary to the logs.

Re: no internet connection OS X host, Win7 guest
I tried changing to NAT yesterday when I saw you told someone else to do it. It didn't make a difference. Nevertheless, I'll try again. You also told someone else to change the adapter type to Intel Pro 1000 T Server. I didn't try that because the options were grayed out.
I'm closing VirtualBox, rebooting it, opening Windows, OMG!!! it's working!
I tried to copy a password from OS X, but nothing copied. Have I not installed the new guest additions correctly?

Re: no internet connection OS X host, Win7 guest
What I'm telling people depends on the circumstances. You can't be blindly following advice that's not addressed to you. You create more problems and then I have to go hunting why the defaults don't work, why people decide to change the defaults and then say that it doesn't work. Geez...
So, is it working? Can I mark this as solved?

YES!
I didn't want to be accused of not checking previous queries. In any event, I had restored the settings to what they were before.
In any event, how can I check that the guest additions are properly installed? And what version is installed? When I click on Devices in the VB tool bar, and then Optical Drives, VBoxGuestAdditions.iso is loaded. But I don't know if it is the correct (5.1.28) version. After I copy something in OS X, there is nothing on the clipboard in the VM.

Re: no internet connection OS X host, Win7 guest
That version (Devices menu) is *always* the correct version, because it comes bundled with VirtualBox. So, if you upgrade VirtualBox to e.g. 5.1.56, the version from there will be 5.1.56.
The shared clipboard is limited to simple text only. And BMPs if I'm not mistaken.

What is a BMP? What I copied was a simple text-- two words-- to see if it would work. And it didn't.

Forget what a BMP is, there's Wikipedia if you want to find out.
Re-install the GAs and if it doesn't work, shut down the VM and post a zipped VBox.log.

Re: no internet connection OS X host, Win7 guest
I had been removing the GA .iso through Devices and Optical Drives, then reinstalling through Devices. This time I uninstalled GA through the Windows menu (all programs). The uninstalled version was 5.1.20, not the current 5.1.28.
I reinstalled GA through Devices menu. Still no go.

Re: no internet connection OS X host, Win7 guest
You have just inserted the ISO, you haven't installed the GAs. Please read Ch. 4.2.1. Guest Additions for Windows. And eject the CD from within the guest after you're done.

Re: no internet connection OS X host, Win7 guest
I had already read that chapter. It says at the beginning
Here's the latest log in case it helps.
Since that didn't work as stated, I tried to follow the manual install directions. But-- the device menu doesn't have what the directions call for:VirtualBox has a handy menu item named "Insert Guest Additions CD image", which mounts the Guest Additions ISO file inside your virtual machine. A Windows guest should then automatically start the Guest Additions installer, which installs the Guest Additions into your Windows guest.
So I removed the CD from the virtual drive as you suggested. I shut down the VM and rebooted it. Still no go.Select "Mount CD/DVD-ROM" from the "Devices" menu in the virtual machine's menu bar and then "CD/DVD-ROM image". This brings up the Virtual Media Manager

Re: no internet connection OS X host, Win7 guest
Because you still haven't installed them!!!
- Devices » Insert Guest Additions CD Image...
- Open Windows Explorer in the guest, navigate to the CD.
- Run "VBoxWindowsGuestAdditions.exe".
- A program will run. That's the GAs actually getting installed.
