I think I've found a solution to this issue.
For a Windows XP Guest OS, I disconnected the shared folder (right click -> disconnect drive under 'My Computer')
Then I did the 'Host -> D' key combination to disconnect the 'Virtualbox Guest Editions'' drive. (hit cancel, or whatever you need to do to close the dialog boxes)
Next I went to 'Devices -> CD/DVD Devices -> then clicked on 'Remove disk from virtual drive''
After that, I was able to able to click on 'Devices -> Shared Folders' and hit the minus button to disconnect the shared folder.
After I figured that out...I took a snapshot
