No sound in Guest

Hi,
I am currently running XP as my guest OS in a ubuntu 8.04 host. I am receiving no sound in XP. I installed it originally and did not have an audio device activated for XP so I quickly turned on the audio feature and switched on XP. It notified me that it had found new hardware (ac97 audio device). This is the device that Ubuntu is currently using. The audio drivers listed within XP are the intel audio drivers normally associated with on board sound although I forget exactly which ones. I have no option option to change any of these as it is the only one listed. I have now switched between the three driver options given to me by Virtualbox (Null audio, ALSA driver, OSS sound) and none of them seem to do anything. I apologize for such a long post and appreciate that I am probably being stupid but any help will be greatly received.

Strange, I have sound in my 1.6.4. Tested on Windows XP Host, with Win XP Guest.

Now with Ubuntu Host and XP Guest: same result.

Both have ICH AC97 Audio driver, Ubuntu uses ALSA.

Solution found

The problem was i have installed the wrong file VirtualBox for my Linux (Ubuntu 8.04) distribution. I have installed the "VirtualBox-1.6.4-Linux_x86.run" and this file give me some problems. The solution was uninstalling and installed the "virtualbox_1.6.4-33808_Ubuntu_hardy_i386.deb", now everything is working smooth.

Thank's :D

had sound lost sound.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in my reply. I decided to reinstall Ubuntu completely and put 8.04 64 bit edition on my system. I installed virtualbox ose and the relevant modules needed to run it via the packet manager and then installed windows xp and ubuntu 7.10 as virtual machines within it. To my surprise they both worked perfectly and using the oss driver both had full sound. However, when I switched my system back on this morning I no longer had sound in either of my VMs. As far as I am aware I have changed nothing and yet now do not have sound. Does anyone know why this has happened and what I can do to fix it without having to reinstall my system again.

Why did you set OSS as the sound server? Use ALSA or PulseAudio instead. Also, make sure you have sound on the Host too.

Hi,
The only reason that I used the oss driver was because I was not expecting it to work for me but I was going to go through the list of drivers available and rule them out through trial and error. Oss was the first one I tried and it worked. I can confirm that the host does have sound and doesn't seem to have changed in anyway. I have now tried ALSA and pulse and neither of them work for either of my two VMs. I think something possibly changed some kernal modules or maybe some dependencies that are needed by virtualbox but this is just a complete stab in the dark and my ubuntu knowledge is far too limited for me to know how to fix it if it is.
