SOLVED -- NO USB devices available

After a new install of VBox, I have no usb devices available;

I have added my username to the vboxusers group.

Per a post online I tried changing the "$attr{bDeviceClass}" entries in lines #4 and #5 above with "vboxusers", but that did nothing so I went back to the original file

prior to installing this version I was able to get the usb devices.

Did you logout/reboot after that? What does "id" show?
Did you install the ExtPack?
Where did you get your VirtualBox from?
What's your host?
Take a look at USB basics and troubleshooting, all of the posts. If you still have a problem after reading through the whole thing, please follow the advice of the last post.

All devices plugged in and VM not running when commands above were run. I also tried adding the Brother printer manually, but that failed, too.

"VBoxManage list usbhost" should have seen something but it failed. This usually means the issue is in the host side VirtualBox driver for what ever reason. I see you uid/gid == 1001 so you are not the one that installed the host, correct? Was VirtualBox installed by you or whom ever has uid/gid ==1000? Also it is unusual for VirtualBox to be installed in /opt ( does not follow lsb defaults ) by default unless it is a fork or self compiled. Can you explain this?

I did install it but after I had installed the new OS Mageia 6. I added previously saved .vdi which I had detached from the old VirtualBox before removing the old OS. With the new OS, my uid changed. The installation to opt was under the install from VirtualBox using the generic amd64 download (*.run). I ahd used this on other installations and it has worked fine and it has always been installed to /opt. I have used this so I can install the latest, but maybe I should uninstall and begin again or maybe check the permissions of the .vdi's? Note: I installed VirtualBox to /opt as root.

I am not all that familiar with mangia but a new install should not have decided to up the default uid/gid number unless the new installer from the publisher requires it. Your explanation of using the .run makes sense as well now that I know what the host really is. Since this is not really a supported guest you may need to ask the mangia folks about this. Someone that uses mangia may come by and help here but there are not that many I am afraid.

So I am a little confused. the *.run installation I have used multiple time previously. I also do not understand that it is not supported as Oracle offers it. I am also not sure of why this should happen. the *.vdi belongs to uid /gid 1001 and was attached to the VirtualBox after it was given its owner. VirtualBox is owned by root:root and has worked before. /dev/vboxusb is in group 'vboxuser' and so am I. I installed the host. The client was created under a different uid, but was attached to the host under my current uid. I assigned the uid when I installed the updated OS, but I don't understand why that would make a difference as the entire install is as root. Obviously, I am missing something right in front of my face, but can't see it, so help me please! What is it the usb host looks for? What permissions does it look for?

Thank you all for your time and thoughtfulness. After all this agony, it was resolved by removing and the reinstalling VirtualBox to /opt. Runs fine now. Go figure. I don't know what the problem was and apologize for not trying this earlier and saving us all grief.

I am not saying that the .run package is not supported. Just the mangia OS is not directly supported. Since mangia is a Linux OS it is possible that VirtualBox will work but may have certain quirks that are not familiar to us here. Usually these are handled by the OS publisher. But you have it working now so things are looking up.
