In UB 16 I tried, for the first time ever, to set up IP Fire in a VM instead of on dedicated HW. I put a USB NT adapter on red0, setup an NAT Network for green0 and a host only adapter for orange0. I got it to the point where it all should have been working. I could connect other VMs to green0 and hit the world with no problems. But I found out there were major bugs with UB16's version of network manager and that was keeping me from having the host connect to vboxnet0. So I reformatted and started over again with UB14 and vb 5.1.24. Only to find out there are regressions in 5.1.24 that prevent vboxnet0 from coming up automagically. So I rolled back to 5.1.22 on UB14 and this still does not work the way everyone describes it in all of the tutorials that I have read.
As I understand it this should be one of those things that "just works".
Now that I have versions of everything that supposedly have no bugs or regressions that affect this function when I initialize the IPF VM then the way that I understand it I should have a new adapter pop up in my nm-app GUI in the taskbar that I can just click on and use as a connection to hit the web through the VM. From what I've read it is supposed to be no more difficult than pointing and clicking on eth0 or a wireless NT. But it's not working that way. (And the adapter did just "pop" in the GUI in UB16. I just couldn't actually connect to the adapter due to bugs in version 1.x.x of network manager.)
vboxnet0 is showing in ifconfig on the UB14 host and I can ping it. orange0 is coming ifup with no issues in the IPF VM and has the same IPv4 address that I see defined for vboxnet0 in the host.
But vboxnet0 is not coming up in the nm GUI on the host as an adapter to connect to on this install of UB14. It was on 16, but b/c of the issues with that version of network-manger I couldn't connect to it.
Now, on 14 vboxnet0 is not showing in the GUI. Supposedly that was supposed to "just work"?
I have not defined any hosts routes for vboxnet0 on the host in the hosts file, nor have I set any parameters for vboxnet0 on the host in /etc/network/interfaces for two reasons: 1) From the tuts I've read I shouldn't have to, unless I am completely misunderstanding what I am reading. 2) I tried all that jazz on 16 and couldn't get around the bug in it's network-manager.
When I try to connect to vboxnet0 through the cli on the UB14 host with:
Code: Select all
sudo ifdown vboxnet0 && sudo ifup -v vboxnet0Code: Select all
ifdown: interface vboxnet0 not configured
Ignoring unknown interface vboxnet0=vboxnet0.At this point I'm pulling out my hair and about to just give up on being able to have the host hit the web through a VM firewall.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
