64-bit Win10 host running 32-bit WinXP guest. Sound stutters unless I don't use GA, but then...

Post by ChrisNonyminus »

(Hi, I'm new to this forum site, I'm sorry if I accidentally put this in the wrong board.)
The mouse stutters too if I DON'T use Guest Additions.
I'm trying to use a VM so I can play The Sims 1 since it doesn't work on Windows 10.
And plus, if I don't use Guest Additions, I can't drag the window and change the guest's resolution while doing so. Also, mouse integration won't work due to GA being uninstalled, which is a bummer.
Can anyone help me with this so that I can just simply play with Guest Additions on with the sound not stuttering or having a delay?

My Windows 10 host has 28 gigs of RAM and a Intel Core i7 4710HQ @ 2.50GHz CPU with 4 cores.

The Windows XP guest has around 6 gigs of RAM and 1 core of CPU.

What version of Virtualbox are you running?

Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click and "Show Log" in the GUI, save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip, and attach the zip here.

Ok, but this might not be an accurate log, as Virtual Box was closed a few times between sessions, iirc.

EDIT: Oh crap, I forgot to shut it down.
I put another zip file with a log saved after I shut the VM down.

It won't be soon.... Numbers are better.

5.1.24 has a couple glitches. Is this a fresh install of Virtualbox or an upgrade? If an upgrade, was the previous version you were using working well? If so, what was ther version? (Numbers, hint hint :) )

Unless that's XP 64-bit, a truly rare beast, then the max it would know how to use would be 4GB nominal, 3.5GB real life, and 2GB is plenty, 1GB might easily be good enough..

The After Shutdown log shows a "nvinitx.dll" that was rejected for hardening security issues. "nvinitx.dll" seems to be an Nvidia graphics driver file. Update your host video drivers, looks like one got through unsigned.

Also, that log seems to only run for 6-7-ish seconds before the guest window was manually closed - unless that XP was a wicked fast boot, seems maybe a longer run might have been necessary to get a decent log.

I had VirtualBox before (and that old version had a problem where I couldn't even open the program no matter how hard I clicked the shortcuts on my host), but I installed this new version, and I'm not sure if it's an upgrade.
It probably is, because it still has some old VMs I used in the old version (that is, before the old version decided it wouldn't run). Also, I'm not sure what that old version was. Possibly 5.1.4.
The Afdter Shutdoiwn log shows a "nvinitx.dll" that was rejected for hardening security issues. "nvinitx.dll" seems to be an Nvidia graphics driver file. Update your host video drivers, looks like one got through unsigned.
Wait, what? I thought my Geforce driver is up to date on my host! And what do you mean got through unsigned? It got into the guest?
I'll try updating my host video drivers anyway. Thanks :D

Also, the XP guest is in fact 32-bit and I changed the RAM to 4GB. Again, thanks for the heads up.

This happens on a Windows 10 host, when major updates happen (like Anniversary & possibly Creators). Upgrading of Virtualbox is necessary.

See viewtopic.php?f=6&t=83855 re 5.1.24 glitches, which include audio.

Try uninstalling Virtualbox, rebooting the host, then installing 5.1.22. On a Windows host, to install Virtualbox properly you must right-click the Virtualbox installer program and choose "Run As Administrator" from the right-click menu, even if your account is an administrator account. (Note that "right-click-Run-As-Administrator" is not "log-off-log-back-on-as-Administrator-double-click", and it is not "I'm-already-an-Administrator-so-I-don't-have-to". Running the installer with a usual double-click even under an Admin account will still not give you the necessary permissions.)

The Nvidia driver didn't get into the guest, no. But Virtualbox prevented it from getting into the Virtualbox process space, too:

See Diagnosing VirtualBox Hardening Issues for the background on this issue. Since the mouse stutters, might be part of the problem. Video drivers are known to be unsigned by accident on occasion.

If I switch to 5.1.22 from 5.1.24, will I lose this guest VM?

It looks like there's a 5.1.25 version in that thread you linked to. Do you think it will solve this problem I've been having with the sound?

Okay, I switched to 5.1.22, and with Guest Additions on, at first, the sound was alright (minus the built in Windows system sounds still having some off quality and being quite stuttery sometimes, as well as only a tiny few sounds in the game), but when I uninstalled Guest Additions off to compare (and the sound was alright, but of course the mouse and resolution on the OS wasn't) and then reinstalled GA, I had the same problem from the original post again. :(

Also, I should mention, the guest can't seem to run videos properly; video files are off when played (such as the trailers for other games within the disc of the game), and the FMV intro in The Sims 1, albeit with audio, is a blank white square with GA on and a black screen with GA off. Just now when running the game actually, the intro lagged and had to load, as if the CD-ROM was experiencing issues in the guest.

5.1.25 may help It is supposed to fix some issues from .24. Read the post carefully to find the version of test build that fixed folks' issues - there were several versions posted and only some worked. You should keep the downloaded installer safe on your backups if and when you need to upgrade Virtualbox. Test builds, with the final version number odd - as in .25 - are not kept for future download when the next even version number ( ie .26) comes out. If the MSI installer system on your host goes south, you will need that exact backed-up odd number installer to recover so you can upgrade Virtualbox.

As to the actual issue, did you upgrade your video drivers so there are no more "supR3HardenedError" lines in the guest log? If you are fully up-to-date or did upgrade and you still see the "supR3HardenedError" lines pointing to files from your video system, you may need to contact the video driver developers and report the unsigned status of the driver file(s) being highlighted in the guest log. Note that I don't know if this will fix your issue, I just know that the error line means some part of the video system is not having the expected action in the Virtualbox system, which may cause video issues at least.

If you are running games in the guest, you should at least have 2D and 3D acceleration turned on in the guest settings, which requires Guest Additions to be installed in safe mode in XP guests. And you should know that games don't always run well in a guest OS. The video system in the guest is very basic.
