host-only network problem with VBox 5.1.24

Hi,
once updated VBox from 5.1.22 to 5.1.24, my host-only network doesn't work properly anymore.
vboxnet0 is listed with ip addr show, but is not listed with ifconfig
and guest and host cannot ping each other.
downgrading back to 5.1.22 it works well again
my host is ubuntu 17.04 64 bit, guests are ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04. I tried to test network with guest addition 5.1.22 and then with 5.1.24 with identical results.
