Inaccessible … Cannot attach medium…VBoxGuestAdditions.iso

Here is the text of the message I'm getting (see attached screenshot for an actual image of it):
Cannot attach medium '/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' {0731d047-34ef-4091-bb0c-6f607958b732}: medium is already associated with the current state of machine uuid {81d32831-0d07-4e86-9566-59c1e6389f40}!.

I just saved a snapshot and shut down VB. After re-booting the Mac on which VB is running, I launched VB and tried to go back to this Windows 10 VM. That's when this message came up. I did see this somewhat related post (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=62874&start=15), but it doesn't seem to be the same thing.

I recently (in the last couple of days) updated Win10 to 1703 (the Creator Version or whatever it's called) and after that update I recall searching the VB forums because the VM guest could not find the bridged folders on the host. After I re-ran the GuestAdditions file, all was well – I thought. It's probable that I had never rebooted the VM after the one re-boot associated with the re-installation of GuestAdditions.

I've been using VB for several years, but I'm not a power user by any means. (I say that so you don't assume I'm sharper than I am when you offer help :) ).

Host: Mac 10.10.5 (Yosemite)
Guest: Win10 v. 1703
VirtualBox: 5.1.22 r115126

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Right-click on the VM in VirtualBox Manager, Show in Finder. ZIP the .vbox file and attach it.

Thank you. I'm attaching the vbox file.

  1. Discard the saved state.
  2. Go to your settings and remove 1 from the 2 virtual CDs. Why do you have 2?
  3. From the remaining one, eject the "VBoxGuestAdditions.iso".

When I right click on the VM's name there is an item "Discard the saved state". However, it is grayed out. So … how do I discard the saved state?

In answer to your question:
"Settings" is also grayed out. And I have no clue why I have two virtual CDs (do you mean .iso files?)

Shut down the VM. Not running. Not suspended.

PCs generally don't like it when you open them up and mess with their innards while they're running. Same as people in fact.

Thank you, mpack, for the message. As far as I know, the VM is not running or suspended. The screen shot I posted earlier should show what it looks like. So is there something I can do when it's in this "inaccessible" state to shut it down? Sorry, I do not understand what my next step is. (Probably it's obvious to others, but not to me.)

Post the ZIPPED "~/Library/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml" and the output of "ls -alR" of the "~/VirtualBox VMs" folder, aka:
  • ls -alR "~/VirtualBox VMs"

Here's the ZIP file of "~/Library/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml".
I'm still trying to figure out how to get "the output of "ls -alR" of the "~/VirtualBox VMs" folder". I assume I need to go to Terminal and get into the right directory and run that command. I'll try.

Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to get
"the output of "ls -alR" of the "~/VirtualBox VMs" folder, aka:

ls -alR "~/VirtualBox VMs"
I have a service on the Mac within Finder so if I right-click on the folder I can copy the path. When I did that, this is what I got:
/Volumes/1.5 TB HGST/Documents on HDD/VirtualBox VMs
My user name is EC3, so in Terminal, I have
EC3$
and a space when I launch Terminal. When I've tried various forms of putting in
ls -alR
as a command, nothing I've done works. Can you tell me the details of how to do this?

Two mistaken assumption on my part, the location of your VMs and your level of expertise with the Terminal.

You don't have your VMs in the "default" location, you've moved them to "/Volumes/1.5 TB HGST/Documents on HDD/VirtualBox VMs", which is an external disk named "1.5 TB HGST". Fine, no problem. In that case, open a Terminal and post the output of the command (just copy it and paste it in the Terminal):
  • ls -alR "/Volumes/1.5 TB HGST/Documents on HDD/VirtualBox VMs/Win10_64bit4"

I thought that things haven't change, so I didn't ask for the latest "/Volumes/1.5 TB HGST/Documents on HDD/VirtualBox VMs/Win10_64bit4/Win10_64bit4.vbox". If that is NOT the case, please post an updated version of the mentioned file, otherwise I will post the new one that you should replace it with.

OK, assuming you've not touched anything, here is a modified "/Volumes/1.5 TB HGST/Documents on HDD/VirtualBox VMs/Win10_64bit4/Win10_64bit4.vbox" file. Backup the original and save this in its place. I tried to keep the saved state. There is a chance that it might fail due to the "hardware" changes that I've made. If it does, let me know so that I can discard the saved state altogether.
