Thank you, socratis.

Situation: no matter whether I use TextEdit.app or TextExpander.app, when I paste in the file contents you gave me, it adds spaces at the left of each line.

Yours looks like this:

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!--
** DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE.
** If you make changes to this file while any VirtualBox related application
** is running, your changes will be overwritten later, without taking effect.
** Use VBoxManage or the VirtualBox Manager GUI to make changes.

Mine looks like the screenshot with four extra spaces at the left of every line. What app am I supposed to use to do this?

Click on the left of the "<?xml" at the beginning of the text block. Scroll all the way to the bottom and Shift-click to the right of "VirtualBox>". Copy the text, switch to any text editor, paste. That doesn't work for you?

Personally I've been using TextWrangler for years, but it shouldn't matter.

Well, if I hadn't seen my own screenshot, I would not have believed it: I was adding space to the left of all lines.

However, I just did it again, and the pasted text looked correct. I saved it the *.vbox file. Then I launched VB. It said "Saved State" for that VM.

But when I tried to open that VM, I got this message:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Win10_64bit4.

pci#0: Device in slot 0x9 has been removed! vendor=0x8086 device=0x7111 [ver=3 pass=final] (VERR_SSM_LOAD_CONFIG_MISMATCH).

Oops, sorry about that, it seems I was a little bit overzealous with the hardware cleaning . Try this one:

Now it looks as if it's going to work. It goes through a several second phase of the progress bar moving.

But just as I would expect it to launch, this message comes up:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Win10_64bit4.

ahci#0: The source VM is missing a device on port 1. Please make sure the source and target VMs have compatible storage configurations [ver=8 pass=final] (VERR_SSM_LOAD_CONFIG_MISMATCH).

Well, that one didn't work either. But you made valiant attempts, socratis (at least I assume they were valient – I'm clueless of what you did).

Anyway, I did discard the Saved State. The VM looks as if it's loading OK.

Based on all you did, can you tell why this happened? Does it look as if I did something to cause it? I'd just like to avoid doing the same thing again :)

Yes, the disaster was man made! You brought this on yourself!!! ;)

Not entirely true. What happened: you had a VM with a SATA controller (1 hard drive attached) and an IDE controller (1 CD attached and loaded with the GAs).

You then added another CD in the SATA controller, which you loaded with a second instance of the GAs. WHY??? You then saved the VM state and when you tried to restore it, kaboom.

I'm not saying that this is not a VirtualBox bug, it most probably is. But it may have been hiding due to "best practices". Most of the people that have one CD available in the VM recipe, do not add a second one. Most people that have already loaded the drive with a specific disk (GAs) do not do it twice. And most people once they're done with the GAs installation, eject the CD.

So, a perfect storm? I don't know what triggered it. It may worth the time for a bug report because it shouldn't fail in theory. I mean, I can't even import the .vbox file, it complaints right of the bat, which is a good-thing™ because it's an easily reproducible scenario.

I'll see if I can reduce the issue to the bare minimum and proceed from there...

Thanks for working on this.

I think it had to do with the fact that I had to re-install the GuestAdditions in order to get the VM to see the host drives.

I don't recall adding any CD other than that.

But you do see the two CD drives, right?

Uh, forgive the ignorance, where where would I see them?

And assuming I do eventually see them, I assume I need to delete one, right? What do I need to do to keep this from recurring?

If you select the VM, look at the right side, under "Storage". You have one HD and one CD under SATA, and one CD under IDE. If you actually select the "Storage", it's going to be more obvious because it shows the CD icons.

Delete one, it doesn't matter which one, but the safest would be the one under SATA. So you would be left with a SATA HD and an IDE CD.

The way to prevent it? Don't add it. This definitely didn't happen by accident, you deliberately added the second CD at some point.

Well, I can repeat the problem to some degree. I shut down the VM, then removed the empty CD under SATA and restarted. Now my links are somehow broken to the shared folders on the host. This is precisely what happened when I updated from Win10 1607 to 1703. IIRC, I searched the forums and saw that someone had reinstalled Guest Additions, and his shared folders showed up (or some other problem was solved by reinstalling GA). That's what I did. Then the first time I saved the machine state, I could not relaunch it.

So, I am thinking that if I go to "Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image", probably I'll be able to repeat the problem. Maybe I'll do that – if I've got the nerve. Then I can delete the CD under IDE and see if the problem persists, recurs, or if something else happens.

No, that's a different problem. Shared folders not working because the GAs need update, that's one thing. Your VM becoming inaccessible because you have multiple instances of the same ISO, that's a completely different kind of a problem.
vboxuser799 wrote:So, I am thinking that if I go to "Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image", probably I'll be able to repeat the problem.
No problem, no. What you'll do is the standard procedure to update your GAs. You'll have a new CD "inserted" in your guest. Execute the VBoxGuestAdditions and you should be all set. Eject the CD from within your guest afterwards.
vboxuser799 wrote:Then I can delete the CD under IDE and see if the problem persists, recurs, or if something else happens.
No, do NOT delete the IDE CD, simply eject the disk from within the guest. Or you could eject the CD from the host, if it's allowed. But do not delete the drive from the IDE controller. You don't yank the drive from your host every time you change a CD, do you?
