Moving VM from Mac to external hardrive

Post by thainah122 »

Hey Guys and Developers,

I know there is probably a bunch lot of other problems like mine but to sum it up I bought a 2TB external hard drive which I thought would be great to move my existing VM from my mac mini (2010). But as I followed the instructions from a certain site, I noticed that when it came to choosing the .vdi file I could not select it or it was faded out. If anyone could help me out that would be great I've been doing a bunch of research but I've just gone through so many errors popping up I didn't know which one to specifically use. But I will include my log in this post.

P.S. Before I tried to transfer my VM to the external I was using my VM (Windows 7 home premium) just fine. Also if this is a repeat of an old post I am sorry again for my noobness in forward to this forum and to virtualbox because I had just started using it.

I don't know what instructions you followed, but moving a VM should not involve messing with VDI files.

FAQ: How to Move a VM.

Be warned that external drives are not optimal for running VMs. First, if it's USB then its likely going to be much slower than an internal drive. Second, the greatest danger with external drives is the risk of unplugging it while the VM is running. That might well corrupt the VM and lose all your data.
