wrong architecture 'amd64'

I am trying to install the .deb package on my machine that runs on 2 dual core amd Opteron2212 with 2GB RAM and get upon trying to launch the package the above message.

Host:
Ubuntu 8.04
Kernel I am using is 2.6.24-19-rt
Gnome 2.22.3

I need to get WIN2K to run to be able to use LOTUS APPROACH for compatibility reasons.

Hi everybody,

in case I do not get any reply because I was not explicit enough: the version I of virtualbox I am trying to install is 1.6.4 (virtualbox_1.6.4-33808_Ubuntu_hardy_amd64.deb) and the package installer does not appear to recognise my cpu's as 64-bit, which they clearly are.

Thanks for thinking about possible solutions.

Could you post your uname -r. It sounds to me as if you are running the 32 version of Ubuntu on your Opteron, which you happily can by the way. The AMD version will only install on a 64bit OS anyway.

Why use the rt OS for a workstation? I am intrigued.

thanks for coming back to me.

uname -r == 2.62.24-19-rt

I had this version installed by a service provder an di assumed they chose this version because my machine has four HD's configured as a soft RAID5.

Hi Terry,

what would be the gain if I upgraded to a 64-bit installation taking into account that I have two dual-core cpu's? could you shed some light or point me into a relevant direction, please?

What it boils down is that some number crunching apps work better in 64bit. If you have > 4Gb RAM you need 64bit. Some component are not yet introduced in 64 bit so you need to run them in 32bit.

Note that AMD-V is supported by VBox in 32bit.
