Guest machine does not start

Hi,

I have Ubuntu 16.04 installed in a Dell Precision M6500. The guest is Centos 7. Until yesterday everything was working just fine. At certain point the guest crashed, so I attempted to restart. What I was seeing is that the three superimposed progress bars were moving very slowly, when finally they got to the end the system got stuck there showing the bars as well as a black screen. I attempted to boot from different kernel versions in the grub menu, but the result was the same. I also attempted to boot into single user mode by adding the word "single" at the end of the grub boot statement but again, it didn't make any difference. I even re-installed virtualbox from the synaptic menu, but nothing changed.

I would appreciate very much any help.

Daniel

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

Code: Select all

00:00:00.853129 Package type: LINUX_64BITS_GENERIC (OSE)
You are using the Ubuntu fork of VirtualBox and we do not support it here. You would need to ask them if there is an issue with VirtualBox. That said I don't really see anything in the log that points to VirtualBox as being the cause, but you would need to ask them to be sure, I would suspect the guest as being corrupt.

I understand. One general question: how do I mount the vdi image so I can poke inside the guest?
Thanks

Easiest way if the OS is not totally trashed is to attach it as a second drive to a working guest, and mount it as such.

Of course a backup of the guest before it crashed would be preferred.

can this working guest be a windoze?
or what method would be available to mount it under the host?

Maybe if your "windoze" supports the format of the guest.
or what method would be available to mount it under the host?
There are some 3rd party programs that say they will do this but I have never used them ( you would need to search for them ). I find it easier to mount as a second drive. Even a livecd will do the trick.

You were right - it was an issue with selinux, so booting from the install media allowed me to re-install the selinux-policy-targeted and voila! The system booted.

Thank you very much for your time and promptness.
