Unable to install Guest Additions on Fedora 25

Post by Sreyan »

I have tried everything related to installing Guest Additions in Fedora 25. I have updated my kernels and kernel-headers, and installed make, bzip and perl and set the KERN_DIR still I am getting
Building the main VirtualBox Module as failed.

When I check the log files it gives me the message of Kernel config is invalid run make oldconfig && make prepare to solve the problem.

When I try to run the command it gives me other errors.

What information is needed from my side and what can I do to solve this problem ?

Moving to "Linux Guests" from "Windows Hosts". The problem is clearly with your guest, not with your host.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

I need to see two things.
Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

And from the guest:
post the /var/log/vboxadd-install.log ( as an attachment )

Right clicking on the guest gave me 5 separate logs, I could not link all of them since the max number of files were 3. Do let me know if they are required, I will upload them in a separate post.

My workspace pc did not have a zip utility for some reason.

I have uploaded all of them as attachments.

Apologies for the confusion.

I don't do off site links so repost the VBox.log and the vboxadd-install.log here as an attachment as I posted.

@Sreyan
In case you missed it both times that Perryg mentioned it: ZIP and ATTACH Vbox.log (ONLY) and /var/log/vboxadd-install.log

@socratis
Would be so kind as to tell me how to add the logs as an attachment if the max size is 128 kib ? My logs are greater than 128 kib, I already told you that in my answer.

I already told you that my individual logs are greater than 128 kib, how else am I suppose to give you the logs ? The max size for attachment is 128 kib. You honestly think I did not try that ?

Did you try zipping them first as told? I've never seen a zipped log more that 128 KB.

It looks like your gcc is not updated to allow for the newer kernel. I would check to see if there is an update to your gcc and try to install again. It would not hurt to make sure the guest is totally up to date as well.

@Sreyan
For future reference, it's best if you attach logs in a new message, compared to editing an old message. We get a notification for a new messages, we do not get a notification for edited messages. ;)

It seems my gcc is updated. Running

Code: Select all

sudo dnf install gcc
did nothing. And my guest is updated as well.

VirtualBox VM 5.0.10 r104061 win.amd64 (Nov 10 2015 16:56:18) release log
00:00:01.298520 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 5.1.22 r115126; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP unusable because of 'VBoxExtPackRegister returned VERR_VERSION_MISMATCH, pReg=0000000000000000 ErrInfo='VirtualBox version mismatch - expected 5.1 got 5.0'')
While this should not keep the guest additions from working the main version should match the extpack version.

What is drive Z? " Z:\Vbox VM's\Fedora\Fedora.vdi"

You should never give all of the CPUs to the guest. It leaves nothing for the host to operate properly.

Code: Select all

NumCPUs           <integer> = 0x0000000000000004 (4)
CPUM: Logical host processors: 4 present, 4 max, 4 online, online mask: 000000000000000f
Conclusion: I would update VirtualBox to 5.1.22 to match the installed version of your extpack and it might also help the guest additions to be installed since the version you have now may not support the 4.8.6-300.fc25.x86 kernel properly.

What if I reduce the number of cores to 2 and remove the extPack ?

And drive Z: is where I keep all my VM's.
