I have a very strange problem. I uninstalled VirtualBox, because the VMs wouldn't load after I did an upgrade of VB. I did "sudo apt-get purge virtualbox". No help.

I am using gdebi (Ubuntu [Mate] Linux Xenial Zesty 16.04 LTS on an i386-based system). Each time I try to install VB, I get the same error message. And the software installer simply refuses to function for VB at all. Any thoughts or solutions?

It looks like you're trying to use the distro's fork version of VirtualBox. You can either ask in their forums for help, or completely remove/uninstall/delete/purge their version and install the official VirtualBox version from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

In addition I am curious as to why the guest additions would be installed on the host. Anyway there also can be a situation I have seen before when using gdebi on Ubuntu. When they made their software center install section they got very restrictive and try to force an install of their software over another. I found that using dpkg to install packages gets around this.

SOLVED. Actually thanks very much. The problem was a missing repository (which took some time to figure out). After I got the key installed, and got the sources.list file to accurately represent my version of Ubuntu (... xenial), I was able to download and install the software, get the extensions pack installed, and the guest pack(s) as well.
