Vista 64-bit not installing on 64-bit machine because

When I try to install Vista Business 64-bit I get the following error from the vista installation program:
"Attempting to load 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode."
I am running 64-bit Fedora 9:
:~>uname -a
Linux jewel 2.6.25.10-86.fc9.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Jul 7 20:23:46 EDT 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
and installed the 64-bit version of VirtualBox:
VirtualBox-1.6.2_31466_fedora9-1.x86_64.rpm
When I created the virtual machine for Vista I specified Vista as the guest OS.
Also, I was able to use this virtualBox to create another virtual machine and install windows XP on it. That works perfectly.
So, did I miss some checkbox that says "64-bit"? I could not find anything in the manual.
Thanks!

Let me guess, the Windows XP you tried was a 32bit OS.
Afaik, x64 quest support isn't implemented yet, but planned for further releases.
Nevertheless, you've got ACPI/ IO-APIC/ PAE/ V/ VT function, do you really need a 64bit guest system at this time?

Thanks. I feared as much.
Someone should change page 13 of the manual, which makes is sound like all versions of windows are supported:
Windows 2000 / XP / Server 2003 / Vista: All versions/editions and service packs are fully supported. Guest Additions are available.
I only need 64-bit vista because, well, that is the only DVD that I have.
Hi all
I am getting the same problem when I am trying to install windows xp 64bit on a RHEL 4 WS 64bit on a IBM workstation.
any clue what can be the issue. I have enabled all settings in VM Setting without any help.
Do u think any change required in RHEL 4 WS Kernel config to propagate underlying INTEL VT support to Virtual box and hence to Windows xp64 bit.
thanks in advance
cheers
Sanjeev

Hi all!
I have the same problem as "sanjeevchauhan77" with the error message written in the first post. I want to install windows XP 64bit as guest in VBox and have a 64bit capable processor. My VBox version is 2.1.4 and also 64bit, as is my OpenSuSE. VT is enabled in VBox. What could be the problem? I'm sure VBox supports Windows 64bit guests, at least there is nothing said to the contrairy.
Thanks for any help.

Quadrouple check your BIOS for vt-x capability and it being switched on.

Unless you update the bios it won't work then.

It's usually called Virtualization. And your CPU needs to support it too.

well, I checked for any updates for my BIOS that will make it support vt-x/AMD-V, but haven't found anything.. then I got to try XP 32bit as guest - will that work? Thanks for your efforts so far.
@Sasquatch: I think my CPU does support it (I looked it up at amd.com, but you can check as well: Athlon XP 6000), its just the BIOS..

BIOS is mostly the issue. My laptop is VT-x capable, but the manufacturer didn't add that as supported. No setting in BIOS for it.

I got VBox to work with winXP 32bit as guest on OpenSuSE 11.1 64bit - that was no problem at all.. it's all because of the missing VT-x/AMD-V support of the BIOS why I can't use a 64bit guest. I think the thread may be closed now. Thanks for all the answers
