Hello All,
This is my first post here and I am a VirtualBox newby, so be gentle on me. If this has been covered before, I apologize in advance. My problem deals specifically with the restart function that one uses within the guest OS. Let's say I update my Linux kernel or some other feature that requires a restart. I usually just go to the restart button within the guest OS and restart the OS and it cycles through the restart.
During the restart, when it says something like hit F12 to choose the source file I just ignore this and let it cycle though and it then it restarts and keeps all of the updates that I just installed. All good.
I am dual booting on my hardware with Windows 10 and Linux Mint 18.1 both installed on separate SSDs. Within Windows 10 I have Ubuntu 16.10 and Kubuntu 17.04 installed as guest OSes in my VirtualBox. Within Mint 18.1 I have Manjaro and OpenSuse installed as guest OSes within my VirtualBox. Of course every distro acts differently as would be expected but my problem lies in restarting Manjaro.
When I update my Ubuntu or Kubuntu or openSuse and then restart the OS from within the guest OS, everything works just fine. After the restart I can go to check for updates and there are no updates, everything was updated and installed and retained. I only have problems with restarting Manjaro.
When I update Manjaro and restart it, then I go back to the update manager none of the updates that I just installed were retained. I am always back at square one. Is this just my system or is this the way that Manjaro works in VirtualBox? Is there a work around?
Thanks for any advice on this issue.
Rocky Bennett

Silly question, I know, but this sounds to me like you're still booting from the live CD. Possible?Rocky Bennett wrote:I am always back at square one.

No, no live CD involved. All of my guest OSes are installed into VirtualBox and I use a desktop shortcut to just open the particular guest that I want to use. I do not go though the VirtualBox startup scenario that requires opening up VirtualBox first.
Thanks for the attention to my problem.

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

OK, I will try this. Sounds like this may be above my pay scale, but I will give it a try.

I have Manjaro as well and it's been so problematic with its updates. I usually prefer to wipe it clean and do a fresh install of a newer release, than trust that it's actually updating.Rocky Bennett wrote:Of course every distro acts differently as would be expected but my problem lies in restarting Manjaro.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

OK, this is exactly what I am experiencing. Like I said, I have different VirtualBox machines with different hosts and different guests and Manjaro is the only one that seems to act differently in regards to the updates.
I am still trying to post that log but I think that this is just typical for Manjaro.
Thanks,
Rocky

I think that this might work.
