"Fatal exception in interrupt" during Guest install

Post by jimmydean67 »

Hi: :)

I am using Windows 8.1 as host, and VB 5.1.22. I was installing Guest Slacko 6.3.0, an Ubuntu distro. All going well until click "Start" and shortly thereafter the black screen quits rolling and shows "Fatal exception....". See Log ATT

00:00:02.956943 HM: HMR3Init: Falling back to raw-mode: VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes
Enable VT-x in your BIOS.

If it's an Ubuntu distro, then select the "Ubuntu" as your VM template, don't go for the generic "Linux" one:
00:00:02.867410 Guest OS type: 'Linux'
00:00:02.679207 Host RAM: 3968MB (3.8GB) total, 1214MB available
00:00:02.956200 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000040000000 (1 073 741 824, 1 024 MB)
00:00:02.956646 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000001000000 (16 777 216, 16 MB)
You need to close some applications in your host or else your host is going to run out of RAM.

I forgot to mention that I am installing the guest from an iso file and not a disk or USB.

I recently ran Ubuntu 16.4 in VB and had no problem other than it was very slow. So I know the Bios is OK.

This time I chose “Other” as the VM template because Ubuntu doesn’t appear in the menu. Strange I thought. Maybe VB doesn’t recognize Slacko as a Ubuntu distro? Perhaps the reason for the problem? Does VB work for all Linux distros? I chose Slacko this time to install in VB because it is very light (208 Mb). It shouldn’t load down VB or CPU. I assigned 800 MB Ram and 8 Gig HD. If you know of any light weight Linux that definitely works in VB please let me know and I will try it.

This time I tried to install Guest again in VB with only FF browser open in Yahoo mail in one tab and your forum response in another tab. Not using much RAM and still got the same result. See Log included.

But have you enabled VT-x in the BIOS?

Which part of Socratis' instructions did you pay attention to? Because the log says: none of them.

Of course Ubuntu appears in the templates list. In fact it appears twice if you enable VT-x.

You have less RAM available for this VM than last time.

I'd like to see a screenshot of that error message, because "fatal exception in interrupt" makes little sense to me. Interrupt handlers don't use exception handlers. Exception handlers are runtime checks for user level code.

Sometimes it makes me wonder; why bother?

I opened the Bios and enabled VT-x. It is now working fine. Thank you guys for being patient with me. I was under assumption that it was enabled due to fact that I had previously installed Ubuntu 16.4 in VB. Obviously it doesn't work every time. Hitting me between the eyes with a 2x4 to check that BIOS straightened me out. :D

Problem solved.
