No newer Mac OS versions as VirtualBox guests?

Post by ant »

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Guest_OSes says only very old Mac OS servers are allowed to install into VirtualBox's guests? I know VMware Fusion can, but was surprised VirtualBox can't. I wanted to install a recent Mac OS version in an old (2012) MacBook Pro (13.3" 9,2 / MD102ll/A model with Intel Core I7 CPU (2.9 ghz with 4 MB L3 cache (Turbo Boost up to 3.6 Ghz)), OS Sierra v10.12.4, 8 GB of 1600 MHZ DDR3 SDRAM, Intel HD graphics 4000, and 500 GB of SSD (replaced its 5400 RPM HDD due to a drop).

Thank you in advanc.e :)

That wiki page is quite outdated. Download VirtualBox and see the options. It goes up to OSX 10.11, but even if you have 10.12 you can use the 10.11 template. There is currently a problem with a fresh install of 10.12.4, but I assume they know about it and are working on it...

PS. While it's good to provide specific details about the hardware and the software versions, you have to keep in mind that too much information makes it difficult to read the important stuff. For example, your phrase:

could have simply been:
MacBookPro 9,2 running OSX 10.12.4
See how simpler and to the point that is? ;)

Thanks. Someone needs to update that Wiki. Darn. I was going to install with v10.12.4 installer. I guess I could wait for the next VirtualBox version or install El Capitan v10.11.6.

You could install 10.12.0, 1, 2, 3 and then upgrade that to 10.12.4. That works. It's only the fresh 10.12.4 install that doesn't.

As an Apple User, I'm surprised that you don't know that a Combo Updater can be used to upgrade directly from 10.11.x to 10.12.x
