[Solved] Virtual Box on OS X Sierra, can't get 64bit to work
I am using the latest version of virtual box 5.1, and even when selecting a 64 bit machine, the guest runs in 32 bit. My recent mac is of course 64 bit. I tried this with linux (it chooses the 686 kernel) and in Windows 10, it returns an error when it senses a 32 bit virtual machine.

Are you sure you're not booting your VM from the 32-bit media? I need a specific example, i.e.:josh2020 wrote:when selecting a 64 bit machine, the guest runs in 32 bit
- I went to the Linux Mint site https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
- I chose the 64-bit option with the Cinnamon desktop
- I chose http://ftp.otenet.gr/linux/linuxmint/st ... -64bit.iso (the whole link).

Re: Virtual Box on OS X Sierra, can't get 64bit to work
Here is something I did specifically:
1. I went to the developer microsoft images website
I downloaded the ready made virtual box images for Windows 10, evaluation mode
I downloaded the zip file which became
WinDev1702Eval.ovf
WinDev1702Eval-disk1.vmdk
2. I clicked on WinDev1702Eval.ovf
It suggests a 32bit Windows 10 machine. I of course, change it to 64bit, but after Windows 10 VM is loaded, Windows reports my machine is 32bit. Nothing I tried changed it to 64 bits.
I can post a youtube screen cast video if anyone needs me to.
Thanks

No need to post anything. You downloaded the 32-bit version. No matter if you change it to whatever is available, it will still be the 32-bit option. Repeat the process and this time be more careful and download the 64-bit Win10 client. If you can.

Re: Virtual Box on OS X Sierra, can't get 64bit to work
There was only one option, the 64 bit. Plus, it was definitely the 64 bit version because a 32 bit version would work under 64 but not the reverse. The error message from Windows is that the Windows 10 is 64 but the hardware is 32.
I did get it to work on VM Ware and Parallels using their evaluation 15 day trial.

Re: Virtual Box on OS X Sierra, can't get 64bit to work
Wrong. Really, really wrong assumption. I can and I do have 16-, 32- and 64-bit clients running on 32- or 64-bit hosts.josh2020 wrote:because a 32 bit version would work under 64 but not the reverse.
I would really hate to download the whole thing, it's going to take a couple of hours at least over here. Just to make it clear, you're talking about downloading it from: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/m ... tools/vms/ right? True, there was only one option presented (doesn't say if it's the 32- or the 64-bit one), and I could only find the 15.15063 build. Is that the one you're talking about?
And could you please double-check the VM Settings » General » Version? What do you have there? If it's Win10 32-bit, can you change it to 64-bit? If 64-bit is not available, please go thoroughly through the FAQ: I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests.

Re: Virtual Box on OS X Sierra, can't get 64bit to work
I'll try to get back to you with more useful info, in a few days. Since I do numerical computations, I always select 64 bits. I downloaded the same image from Linux Mint, and I specified a 64 bit machine in Vbox. It chose to use the 32 bit kernel. I then took the same exact image (iso) and ran it through vmware, and it correctly choose the 64 bit kernel.
On a PC, I would check the bios, but I don't think I can do that in a mac. Also, I am experiencing this on two different macs, a new mac book pro and an imac. It is probably some setting on vbox or mac os x sierra. Since I can install 64 bit VMs on my mac, the issue is probably with Virtual box.

Who "chose" that? VirtualBox?josh2020 wrote:I downloaded the same image from Linux Mint, and I specified a 64 bit machine in Vbox. It chose to use the 32 bit kernel.
Oops, my bad. This was canned answer #29 and I didn't notice the "OSX Hosts" forum.josh2020 wrote:On a PC, I would check the BIOS, but I don't think I can do that in a Mac.
Absolutely, definitely not. I will download the ZIP from Microsoft and see what's going on.josh2020 wrote:I am experiencing this on two different Macs, a new Mac Book Pro and an iMac. You might have to wait, not the fastest connection on the planet...

Re: Virtual Box on OS X Sierra, can't get 64bit to work
What meant below is that I downloaded the Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" - Cinnamon (64-bit) iso, then I made a virtual box 64bit linux virtual machine, next I booted up the virtual machine using the iso file, followed the directions to install linux, and checked the kernel and it was i686. I'll try to do a screencast later. I am sure the problem is something simple that I am missing.
Thanks helping.

Re: Virtual Box on OS X Sierra, can't get 64bit to work
I seem to have Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" - Cinnamon (64-bit) running in 64bit running now, though it says it is running without video hardware accelerations. I work on Windows10 and report back.
Re: Virtual Box on OS X Sierra, can't get 64bit to work
I am not sure why, but Windows 10 and Linux seems to work now, in 64 bit mode. Thanks for your help.
