Performance optimization

I am a Linux novice while I am familiar with VirtualBox on Windows hosts.
After installing VirtualBox on an Ubuntu desktop based on an Intel Core 2 quadcore processor with 8 GB RAM I see Ubuntu guest VMs perform worse than I expect.
I presume there is some problem in the guest PC installation.
Where can I locate hints to trobleshoot performance issues while creating Linux guest VM on Linux host PCs?
Is there any guideline to assign resporces (i.e. RAM, processors, ...) to guest VMs in order tio optimize performances?
Regards
