Size of data drive

I'm running VB 5.0.30 on Ubuntu/KDE 15.10 host with a Win7-32 guest OS.
I originally set the data file as 40 GB on a separate 250 GB SSD-HD. The data file is at /mnt/sdb/VirtualBox VMs/Win7-32/Win7-32.vdi.
Over time I've discovered that 40 GB is not enough for my purposes and I would like to increase the size (the entire SSD is available) so I can run a number of Windows programs that don't have suitable linux alternatives.
A while back I tried to increase the data file to 50 GB, but don't recall how I did that. More so, I don't think it worked. Under Machine > Settings > Storage, and highlighting the Win7-32.vdi under the "Controller: SATA" line, it says:
The the actual *.vdi file is still listed at 39 GB on my file manager.
My question is how can I increase the size of the drive? Thanks for any help.
