Size of data drive

Post by Lappert »

I'm running VB 5.0.30 on Ubuntu/KDE 15.10 host with a Win7-32 guest OS.

I originally set the data file as 40 GB on a separate 250 GB SSD-HD. The data file is at /mnt/sdb/VirtualBox VMs/Win7-32/Win7-32.vdi.

Over time I've discovered that 40 GB is not enough for my purposes and I would like to increase the size (the entire SSD is available) so I can run a number of Windows programs that don't have suitable linux alternatives.

A while back I tried to increase the data file to 50 GB, but don't recall how I did that. More so, I don't think it worked. Under Machine > Settings > Storage, and highlighting the Win7-32.vdi under the "Controller: SATA" line, it says:

Code: Select all

Virtual Size: 50 GB
Actual Size: 38.97 GB
Details: Dynamically allocated storage
The the actual *.vdi file is still listed at 39 GB on my file manager.

My question is how can I increase the size of the drive? Thanks for any help.

How to resize a Virtual Drive.

Note what it says about snapshots.

Finally, "actual size" is the occupied volume. This does not change when you increase the capacity, it only changes when you add more data. If increasing the drive size automatically filled the additional capacity with data then I expect people would object.
