Why isn't a 64-bit guest available in a new setup?

I am using Xubuntu 14.04.5 64-bit and wish to install QubeOS 64-bit.

Do you know of any way to get that information from the command line? It seems it makes more sense if the operating system recognizes the CPU as being 64-bit, instead of just the BIOS.

If you want 64-bit guests you must enable hardware virtualization ( VT-x/AMD-v ). No way around it.

Get it, yes. Set it, no. You got to do what Perryg said. Also, "CPU has VT-x" versus "VT-x is available", is a different thing. Something else may be using it exclusively, as per the FAQ.

Just to get/see the availability or not, run:
  • VBoxManage list hostinfo
Look for the line:
  • Processor supports HW virtualization: yes

Thanks for your insight.

Sadly, that line does not exist. Therefore, I guess the answer is "No". Bummer.

I just noticed something... What's your exact VirtualBox version and where did you get it from? If you got it from your distribution's repositories, you've got to purge that and install the official one from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

That won't most probably solve your problem, but it may prevent future ones...
