Have been annoyed by this problem for years, without finding a fix.

If you boot a VM in say workspace 2 and switch back to workspace 1 to do something else, the VM "follows" after at a point in boot process and position itself at the active workspace.

How can I prevent this and make VM stay in desired workspace?

You forgot to mention:

• your host's build and version,
• your window manager,
• your VirtualBox version,
• your guest (not that important, just for completeness) and if it happens with all guests,
• if you're full screen/seamless,
• at which "point" this happens,
• if it is consistent.

Do you really expect anyone to know more and help you with this?
