Have been annoyed by this problem for years, without finding a fix.
If you boot a VM in say workspace 2 and switch back to workspace 1 to do something else, the VM "follows" after at a point in boot process and position itself at the active workspace.
How can I prevent this and make VM stay in desired workspace?

You forgot to mention:
- your host's build and version,
- your window manager,
- your VirtualBox version,
- your guest (not that important, just for completeness) and if it happens with all guests,
- if you're full screen/seamless,
- at which "point" this happens,
- if it is consistent.
