Can't install program in Windows XP Mode

Post by azure »

Hi I'm really a newbie here so please be patient with me.I searched a bit but I didn't find my issue. I am running Windows XP Mode in VB on Windows 10. I'm not having any overall issues with the virtual Windows XP. The reason That I am doing this is to try and install an program that was giving me issues in Windows 10. (Chilton Labor Guide 2009 version). I began the install process and got much further along in it than I was in Windows 10 itself, but at a certain point when I think the install was almost done, it asked me for the serial key which i typed in, than it restarted. After it restarted it asked me to agree to licensing and it seemed like it was probably going to verify my key and finish the install, but at that point the VM stopped and the guru told me "a critical error has occurred..." At first i thought maybe the install needed to access the internet which I hadn't setup yet in my XP Mode. But after setting up internet and verifying it works, same thing happening.

Would really aprpeciate any thoughts or tips. Guru told me to post logs here, I have to apologize I'm not familiar enough with logs and protocols of how to post them as I am a real beginner with computers in general, its a miracle I was able to get this far. So I'm sorry for probably posting much more of the logs than needed, but if anyone can assist I would be extremely thankful and appreciative.

Nate

azure,
Partial logs are not that useful. ZIP the VBox.log and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

I do want to add one more point if it may be relevant. Although I am able to connect to the internet now in Windows XP Mode, it "doesn't like" many websites and won't navigate to them. IE also would not download files for me from the internet (wanted to install Opera). I guess this is probably due to settings for security or some other issue. I tried messing around with the settings without that much luck. I don't really care about the internet itself because I don't really need it for that, but if the reason my program install keeps crashing by licensing agreement/serial key validation is because it can't properly connect to the internet (a totally made up theory by me) then maybe that would explain it...thanks guys!

I don't know if the availability of network is a requirement or not for your software, but it definitely does not generate a Guru Meditation error. Your error is the same as in ticket #14597, which pretty much says "enable VT-x" in your computer. Unfortunately, you can't because your Intel Atom N2600 CPU does not support it, it's too weak of a processor.

As for your other question, WinXP and IE6 is way too old for today's internet. The certificates have expired, IE6 is far from being compliant with today's HTML and generally speaking, it won't work. If you want to see if the internet is indeed available, open Command Prompt and type the command "ping 8.8.8.8". If it comes back without an error, you're all set. But you can't browse.

Thanks Socratis! I appreciate that you took the time to look at the logs. Any possible tips for the install or am I pretty much stuck as far as this approach?

And as far as internet, some sites work and some don't.

I'm afraid that the software you want requires (for some unknown reason VT-x to be present. Since you can't physically have VT-x, I'm afraid that, short of a new computer, you're stuck.

Which proves that internet connectivity is working and IE6 and its compatibility is the problem. I remember others suggesting a Firefox spin-off called PaleMoon. And a quick search shows that this too is discontinued, but they still offer better compatibility compared to IE6. See: https://www.palemoon.org/palemoon-atom.shtml

Thanks again. It's so annoying, the whole reason I tried this in the first place is because in Windows 10 my install disc got stuck when it decided that it needed to install Windows Installer 3.1 but it kept returning there is not enough storage for that command when I tried the Installer install. I googled the issue and apparently others have gotten similar messages but I didn't find one universal solution, and I'm a novice. Any other ideas for a workaround in Windows 10 itself other than a VM?

Try what you were trying again in Windows 10. Take note of the exact error messages, then post on a Microsoft forum.

I did see this:

Is your guest truly an "XP Mode" virtual machine that was distributed by Microsoft for use on Windows 7? Or is it installed from a real XP install disc that could have been used way back when on a real PC?
