Try first to disable Sophos' On-Access Scanning option. If that doesn't work, uninstall Sophos. See if that fixes it.

I was told by IT operations, removing Sophos was not an option.
Was also told by IT that other MAC's (not the latest MBP like me) were running Sophos and did not have any issues starting up VirtualBox.

I said to first try to disable the "On-Access Scanning". Step two would have been to remove Sophos. And if step one doesn't work, ask your IT guys if you can remove Sophos temporarily to test the proof of concept. You can even take your MBP off the network if you have to, if it makes them feel better.

I know what IT policy can mean, but just out of curiosity, please ask them how many OSX viruses they have stopped so far. Honest question...

Well, there are people that use the latest and greatest VirtualBox on the greatest and latest MBPs. The only difference is the antivirus that you have. If you take that of the equation (even temprorarily), then maybe you should be talking to Sophos, or have Sophos developers contact the VirtualBox developers and sort this out. The collaboration with previous antivirus vendors has been very good.

For this to happen, you'll need to open a ticket. See: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Bugtracker. I don't believe that there's a similar ticket open, but it won't hurt my feelings if you don't take my word for it and do a search for yourself. The ideal ticket would be something like:
With the MBP (full, complete details) running OSX (full, complete details), VirtualBox (full, complete details) doesn't crash if run standalone, but crashes consistently if run in conjunction with Sophos (full, complete details).
Then you contact Sophos and you point them to the ticket that you opened. Expect results "really soon"™.
