Hello.

I am taking a course on Udemy Online about Network Security. The course instructs me to purchase a Network Adapter for detecting Wireless Networks and to perform certain tasks. So I purchased a TP-Link WN722n which was recommended on several sites for this specific setup. Let me tell you my setup first...

I have Ubuntu 16.10 (YakketyYak) installed as my Host Machine. It is fully updated and working just OK. NOTE: The Wireless Adapter is detected by the Host and does work well.

I have VirtualBox Graphical User Interface Version 5.1.6_Ubuntu r110634 installed and fully updated. I also have USB Extension Pack installed.

I have Kali Linux 2016.2 installed as a .iso file and is installed via Graphical Interface (NOT LIVE).

I do have Guest Additions installed and working properly.

I am running into an issue where when I go to Settings>Network>Adapter 1 it does properly show NAT Network which is attached to NatNetwork. My 'Advanced' settings are:
Adapter Type: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)
Promiscuous Mode: Deny
MAC Address: 0800276E1527
Cable Connected: Yes

HOWEVER when going to Settings>USB>USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller there are NO detected USB's plugged in.

And I am waiting until Kali has fully booted before inserting the Network Adapter and it still does not show.

I ran and both eth0 and lo show "No wireless extensions".
I ran and show: I just don't know where to go now...
PLEASE help me, I have been working on this for about 15 hours (since 3am) and several re-installs, updating, upgrading, changing etc...

Did you add your user name to the vboxusers group and reboot?

Note: using a USB adapter you will not setup the network in the guest settings.

If you got that from the Ubuntu repository, purge it and install the latest from the VirtualBox official site: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

1. Make sure that the Extension Pack is installed on the host. The same version as VirtualBox.
2. Check and make sure that you're part of the "vboxusers" group.

4. Create a USB filter in your guest settings while the device is plugged in the host. Delete all values except Name, VendorID and ProductID. Check also http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids to make sure that you have the numbers correct.
5. Unplug the device.
6. Start your guest (the one that you applied the filter to). Let it start completely. Log in if you have to.
7. Plug your device. The filter should capture it and pass control to your guest.

Yes I did.

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

Everything installed is from the official source.

1. Verified Extension Pack is installed for the correct version
2. Verified am part of vboxusers group
3. Verified USB 2.0 and 3.0 have been tested - neither work.
4. Unable to create filter - When editing filter only the NAME is showed (Filter 1). My adapter is not on that list you provided.
5. Unplugged.
6. Started up Kali. Waited until I was able to launch programs.
7. Plugged in card, nothing showing.

This is my log file for my Virtual Machine.

Here is the new one. I installed the pre-built version instead.

Your failure seems to be at step 4: recognizing the USB device in VirtualBox and creating a filter. Did you reboot the host after you're added yourself to the "vboxusers" group?

Also, you do NOT have the official packages according to the latest log:

That's the disto's fork. As I mentioned, purge that and download the official one. With its appropriate extension pack. Otherwise this discussion is going to be very short and I'll have to direct you to Ubuntu's forums.


After the new installation, with the USB device(s) plugged in and no VM running, open a Terminal. Type the command:

• VBoxBugReport "<VM_Name>"

It will generate a "YYYY-MM-DD-hh-mm-ss-bugreport.tgz" file in the current directory. Attach that file in your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

I guess that tells you something about how much such recommendations are worth. Or maybe they said "we recommend the TP-LINK W722N" but left out one word: "avoiding".

I could repeat what I wrote some time ago, but instead I'll just point to an existing thread.

As I suspected you do not have the right extension pack and are using the Ubuntu extension pack that does not support USB. So all you need to do to get this going is to remove the extension pack and program and install the official versions from virtualbox.org.
