Ubuntu LTS 16.04 VM install on Manjaro host (virtualbox 5.1.14)

I have a similar issue to razm (Linux Guests forum, 2017-01-24). I have a Manjaro host up-to-date via pacman -S, so using virtualbox 5.1.14. I have also installed virtualbox-guest-iso. I am actually a little confused by this as I understood from using Windows hosts, that GA is installed 'in' the VM, so you have to have an installed OS in the VM to install GA, but I digress.
When I boot off the Ubuntu LTS 16.04 ISO to install it in the VM, it begins OK, but after a minute or so, it seems to be switching video modes and ends up with psychedelic garbage in the VM window (it looks so similar to razm's screenshot). I have installed Windows7 sp1 64-bit and CentOS 6.8 64-bit into VMs without incident on this host.
Any help much appreciated...
