SATA, lockup and host I/O cache

Post by Antiphates »

On a previous occasion, quite a while ago, I was setting up a Windows guest on a Linux Host (Arch, 64 bit) and the virtual machine would hang at the "Starting Virtual Machine 0%" dialog box. After some experimentation I discovered that if I put the virtual hard disk on an IDE controller rather than the SATA controller it defaulted to the machine started correctly.

Just now I have tried importing an OVA appliance from Windows which runs Arch Linux as the guest to run on an Arch Linux host. Again the issue of hanging at the "Starting Virtual Machine" dialogue reappeared. On a whim I tried toggling the "Use host I/O cache" checkbox and it seems the hang only occurs when use of the host I/O cache is disabled. It is disabled by default.

Anyone else seen this?
