[Solved] VRDP with copied vm does not work

Hi there,

I am moving a vbox from an old machine to a newer one. The machine itself should work in headless mode.
On the new machine, everything works fine, except the rdp access. What I did so far:

- copied the start script for the vbox to the new machine. In there, all settings (headless, port etc) are definied
- created a user with the same name and uid on the new machine.

What is working?
I can launch the vbox on the new machine. It perfectly works. The start script therefor launches it without any problem. In the start script, I definied the headless mode, the rdp port etc.
When I access the new machine itself (an ubuntu 16.04 system), I can see and work with the vbox without any problems.

What does not work?
I cannot directly access the vbox with vrdp on the port I defined in the start script. On the old machine, this works.

Additional infos:
The new system is ubuntu 16.04. The net settings seem okay for me (I do not have remote access yet, I will try to get it as soon as possible).
What I noticed is: When I try to connect directly to the machine with vrdp (e.g. with remmina), I directly get the info that no connection is possible - it does not try to establish a connection to the machine for a few seconds before failing.

Can somebody please help me to find the cause?

Did you install the ubuntu fork of virtualbox or the official one from virtualbox.org?
Since you are wanting to use vRDP did you install the matching extension pack?

I used the package from ubuntu:

# dpkg --list | grep -i virtualbox
ii virtualbox 5.0.24-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.1 amd64 x86 virtualization solution - base binaries
ii virtualbox-dkms 5.0.24-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.1 all x86 virtualization solution - kernel module sources for dkms
ii virtualbox-ext-pack 5.0.24-0ubuntu1.16.04.2 all extra capabilities for VirtualBox, downloader.
ii virtualbox-guest-additions-iso 5.0.24-0ubuntu1.16.04.1 all guest additions iso image for VirtualBox
ii virtualbox-guest-utils 5.0.24-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.1 amd64 x86 virtualization solution - non-X11 guest utilities
ii virtualbox-guest-x11 5.0.24-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.1 amd64 x86 virtualization solution - X11 guest utilities
ii virtualbox-qt 5.0.24-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.1 amd64 x86 virtualization solution - Qt based user interface

As you can see, the ext package from the original repository is also installed

The start script is attached, I am always using "startvb-w2k.sh start" not the "start_with_vrdp" option!

Further infos:

# ps aux | grep -i virtualbox
vmuser 3328 0.1 0.3 167916 12412 ? S 16:29 0:00 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxXPCOMIPCD
vmuser 3333 0.3 0.5 565820 20192 ? Sl 16:29 0:00 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxSVC --auto-shutdown
vmuser 3370 30.9 4.3 1914992 171448 ? Sl 16:29 0:17 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxHeadless -startvm {c4d9069b-9d78-4e52-80d3-59517479fbeb}
root 3466 0.0 0.0 15796 1032 pts/6 S+ 16:30 0:00 grep --color=auto -i virtualbox

# netstat -pa | grep 8851
tcp 0 0 *:8851 *:* LISTEN 3370/VBoxHeadless

So as far as I can see, it should work from the network side - or am I wrong?

The distros fork does not support vRDP. It uses VNC and is not the same. You might be able to use their build but you would need to ask them how since we only support the official version from VirtualBox.org.

Okay. I will then try to install the official package. I will post later on if all is working.

Excellente :) Package 5.1.14 together with the ext pack from the site is installed. And all is working perfectly :)

Thank you.
