Cannot change settings properly

Hi everyone,

i'm running a Debian on a WIndows guest. I want to change my machine's settings but I can't because I have to completely shut it down. However, if I do, I lose all my changes and the guest boots without graphical interface (very weird blue screen-like installation menu).
Can you please help?
Thanks.

EDIT1:
I just need to add a serial port (trying to connect my arduino to the Debian guest machine).

What would you do in a real computer?
  1. Insert the installation disk (ISO) and boot from it in the installation phase.
  2. After the installation, remove the installation disk (ISO) so you wouldn't perform the installation from the beginning.
  3. Shut down the computer if you want to change the network, RAM, CPUs, etc.
  4. Reboot your computer with the new settings.
Replicate the above steps in the virtual machine and you should be all right.

Thank you for your help. All this seems a bit weird to me, is there any tutorial or a more explained set of steps to follow?

Are you sure you're not working in a LiveCD environment?
And if you're not, have you removed the (virtual) installation medium (iso)?
