Server 2008 guest doesn't start after vdi resize

Post by BobElderGeek »

I've been using VirtualBox for about a year and I love it! Your forum and other resources have permitted me to figure out any issues I've had with it, until now.

Running vbox Server 2008 guest headless on Ubuntu server. I used modifyhd to change the size of my disk as I was nearly out of space. The vm would not boot after this. Oddly I receive no errors, the guest attempts to start and gets a power off request before the GUI starts according to the log:

Code: Select all

Full log attached.
What did I do wrong? Can I fix it? This is a virtualized AD Domain Controller and Global Catalog server, if possible I'd like to get it back.

We would need to see the information you used during the resize to be able to figure out what happened especially if you did not see any errors during the resize.
From what I see so in the log file far the guest never gets to a boot sequence. Do you have a backup? Oh and you are using the Ubuntu fork which we do not support here. You should ask them what might be wrong in their version.

I am running Server 2008 as the guest on a Ubuntu 16.04 server. Are you saying I should use the Windows fork?

I'm saying that the version of VirtualBox you are using is from Ubuntu and not from virtualbox.org. This makes a difference since they modify the original source code to create their own. This usually is not a problem until issues arise. Since we do not know exactly what they have changed you would need to contact the maintainer of their version ( fork ) or remove theirs and install the original from virtualbox.org.

I notice that you don't mention running a partition manager after the resize, so unless you forgot to mention additional steps then the guest OS should have been oblivious to the resize - unless the guest OS was configured to use "Windows Dynamic Disk" partitioning (not to be confused with dynamically allocated virtual hds as used by VirtualBox). Windows Dynamic Disk creates a 1MB partition database at the end of the disk... obviously "the end of the disk" is a relative term whose value changes if you resize the disk. VBoxManage has no knowledge of guest filesystems and does NOT fix this for you.

CloneVDI would probably do a better job of resizing the VDI, since it does have some knowledge of "popular" filesystems.

Please note that while I'm willing to point you in the most likely direction, I will not enter into a conversation about this while you are still someone else's fork.

Perry I understand and I did the upgrade from apt-get rather than download from virtualbox.org. This is, in fact, when the problem occured; I will uninstall, download directly and report if this fixes the problem. Thank you for your direction.

Mpack I have not been able to get the operating system functioning so I have yet to run a partition manager but thank you for your assistance.
