VirtualBox version ?

As a new user of Ubuntu I have installed (unknown version) of VirtualBox and loaded Windows XP.
Windows works fine.

I am trying to activate additional real HDD to be able to access my old Window hardware disks and eventually copy them to Linux.

I am connecting to my hardware via IDE to USB bridge and I can verify it via lusb , no problem.
I am having an issue selecting USB type - 2.0 - in Windows itself , basically saying I need to add some "extension" to the VirtualBox.
I was hoping to update my VirtualBox to the latest release but cannot find anywhere how to activate automatic updates.
I did checked "preferences" and it is not there.

When I tried to install this USB "extension" I received error message saying "expecting 5.1 , but got 5.0 ""
Consequently this error is stopping me from detecting correct USB ( 2.0) since it was not installed.

If some please give me an assistance in
identifying my VirstualBox version first, than how to activate automatic updates I'll be grateful.

The Help|About... box in the VirtualBox manager app will tell you what your software version is.

The extension pack (host plugin pack) is required for VM features such as USB2/USB3. You install it on the host. The version number of the extension pack must match that of the VirtualBox software.

If you need to continue this conversation then please provide a VM log file. With the VM (any VM) fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Part 1 solved - I have Version 5.0.24_Ubuntu r108355
Now where do I activate automatic updates?
I think I can manage to add the extension pack after update.

You need to reply by adding the information Don asked for.
If you need to continue this conversation then please provide a VM log file. With the VM (any VM) fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.
Then we can know what we are really dealing with and not have to guess at the answers.

I do not see why you need the log.
I just need to know how to activate automatic update.

Since this was my first post - does each post have to have this what appears to be a canned request for log?
Seem superficial, but what do I know.
Here is is anyway

No you certainly do not need to provide a log. That is your choice, but if you don't you will not get any help that matters.
I will leave you with the others now and you and they can sort this out.

A log gives us answers to all questions we might have, rather than having to pull them from you one question at a time. For example, the log can tell us the information missing from your first post, such as VirtualBox version, whether the extpack is installed already, and what form of USB support is enabled in the guest, to name three questions off the top of my head. The alternative being a ping-pong here for the next 6 months to get the same questions answered.

The reason the request is in every topic that asks for help is because the VM log is ALWAYS REQUIRED in order to be able to provide accurate help.

Also, I gave quite precise instructions as to how to provide the log, so I do hope you didn't think that small excerpt would cut it.

Thanks for all the info, but I still do not have an answer how to update / set automatic update.
It would be appreciated to stay on topic, instead of giving instructions how to read posting guide - second time.
If you can give me a hit WHERE / which menu have this option to set it will take less of your time than what you have done so far.
Thanks

PS
If the log tells YOU what my version is it still does not tell ME how to retrieve it. I should not have to have to read the log to get the version anyway. KISS

That's the Ubuntu fork. You have to ask the Ubuntu folks.
julyjim wrote:Now where do I activate automatic updates?
In the preferences.
julyjim wrote:but what do I know.
I'm wondering that myself.
julyjim wrote:If the log tells YOU what my version is it still does not tell ME how to retrieve it.
You were told twice already.

Oh, wait, you shouldn't even be here, but in the Ubuntu forums. My bad...
