Really Messed Up

Created a virtual machine with recovered data, of course it did not boot. Deleted the VM, forgot to detach the data... Saw it saying deleting g.vhd -- Now I fear all is lost. Am I incorrect... I know data can be recovered, but not sure how virtual box treats data that is connected to a VM when it's profile is removed. Any suggestions?

If you tell VirtualBox to remove a VM, and you confirm to the warning dialog that you want to delete the associated VM files, then yes it does delete the VM files. On some desktops the files will go into a recycle bin, but I don't know what what kind of shell you are using. In any case I don't know much about Linux shells.

Since the VM was new I assume you can recreate the VHD by whatever process you used to create it originally, e.g. it sounds like it was copied from a backup medium.
